Descent Into Undermountain is a classic dungeon crawl below the streets of Waterdeep in the Forgotten Realms. Waterdeep is in the Sword Coast region of Faerûn — a savage wilderness dotted with powerful and iconic cities such as Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter and Waterdeep.
1376 DR Year of the Bent Blade
A thin strip of civilization that stretches down this coast, where widely spaced cities are arranged like beads on a string. A combination of roads and wagon tracks loosely connect the cities that stretch from Luskan in the north to Calimport in the south, passing through Neverwinter, Waterdeep, Baldur’s Gate, and other great ports along the way.
Waterdeep: Also known as the City of Splendors or the Crown of the North, was the most important and influential city in the North and perhaps in all Faerûn.
Undermountain: This ancient dungeon started as a mine and dwelling of dwarves belonging to the Melairkyn clan. In the centuries since the dwarves were driven out it has been the home of drow, duergar, powerful wizards, criminal groups, and convicted felons.
Yawning Portal: The Yawning Portal inn, built in 1306 DR by the later Lord of Waterdeep Durnan the First on the ruins of Halaster Blackcloak’s old tower, has gained most of its renown for being the primary open route to Undermountain. A well within its walls leads down into the first dungeon of Undermountain. The Yawning Portal is located on Rainrun Street in Waterdeep’s Castle Ward between Waterdeep Castle and Snail Street. A signboard that simply reads “The Yawning Portal”, hanging on chains from a black iron pole above the front door, announces the entry to the inn.
